An Initiation into the Mysteries of Western Art
September-October 2021

Oxford short-term online course
We bring to your attention a unique course of lectures on Art History, organized by M17 CAC together with Cherwell College Oxford. Drawing on research for his forthcoming book, The Secret Mind of Art, Edward Clarke will initiate you into the mysteries of western art. You will engage closely with ten masterpieces of painting, sculpture, and architecture, from antiquity to the late nineteenth century, learning to look at them in their original contexts in such a way that you can begin to ascend their soulmaking ladder.

PhD Oxford
In different classes you will explore the historical, religious, and philosophical contexts of a range of representative works of this period to apprehend their hidden spiritual significance.

Ten masterpieces will provide the weekly focus for our ten classes. In the first few weeks you will look at the foundations of western art in Antiquity and the Middle Ages, exploring the Pantheon in Rome, Autun Cathedral, and Notre Dame in Paris, to consider an art that realizes the supernatural on a certain level. In the middle part of the course you will focus on the Renaissance in Italy.

Week by week you will learn to look with fresh, but well-informed, eyes at such radiant works as Piero della Francesca's Baptism, Botticelli's Birth of Venus, and Donatello's David. Building on your appreciation of the mysteries inherent in these works you will then ascend to a critical judgement of
Michelangelo's immense Sistine Ceiling and Titian's sublime Bacchus and Ariadne, before entering Palladio's well-proportioned Villa Barbaro in the Veneto. In the final class we will ruminate upon nineteenth century developments and focus on Cezanne's Mont Sainte-Victoire Series.

The hope is that you can respond to these masterpieces with increased contextual knowledge and sensitivity to
their soul-making capabilities.
